Actor Wagner Moura, the star of the film “Secret Agent”, said that he is already preparing for the film’s Oscar campaign, an award in which he could be nominated for Best Actor.
“It is a film about a man who decides to stay true to his values when everything around him says otherwise,” the artist said in an interview with Fantastico on TV Globo. “I spoke with Altineo (Walter Salles), with his wisdom that guides me a lot. I also spoke with Nanda (Fernanda Torres). I’m excited for the season.”
“Secret Agent”, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, is a thriller that takes place in two periods, but the main events take place in 1977, during the military dictatorship. Currently, two researchers are listening to cassette tapes containing recorded conversations of characters from that time, and are trying to unravel the fate of Marcelo, Wagner Moura’s character, who arrives in Recife driving a yellow Beetle in the middle of a carnival.
In Recife, Marcelo joins a group of refugees after being threatened with death by a government-linked businessman. Under another identity, he searches for answers from his past and fights to survive. The production has been selected by the country to bid for a spot in the 2026 Academy Awards.
In May, Mendonça Filho won the Cannes Film Festival’s Best Director award for the film, and at the same event Moura received the Best Actor award, awards that brought further international attention to the film.
During the conversation with journalist Mago Coutinho, Moura recalled Captain Nascimento, the hero of the movie “Tropa de Elite,” one of his main roles in cinema.
“I lived with many BOPE men. They had integrity and believed they were doing something important for the country.” The character is remembered shortly after a police operation that killed 121 people in the Alemão and Pinha communities in Rio de Janeiro. For some viewers, the film views police violence as normal.
“People can interpret the character any way they want,” says the actor. “But we cannot normalize the presence of 121 dead bodies on the ground. This is madness, madness.”
He also talked about “Last Night At The Lobster,” the first film he directed in the United States. In addition to directing, he also works on film. “It’s a typical American Christmas movie. This magic comes not from heaven, but from people.”
