A volcano erupted in southern Japan on Sunday (11/17/2025), sending a plume of ash and smoke into the sky, triggering ash warnings.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that Sakurajima volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, erupted before dawn when it spewed ash and smoke at an altitude of more than 4,400 metres.
An official from Kagoshima Prefecture, where the volcano is located, said no damage was initially reported.
The meteorological agency warned of ash falling in parts of Kagoshima and neighboring Miyazaki Prefecture, after several eruptions.
In addition, the eruption threw volcanic rocks up to 1.2 kilometers from the crater.
The weather agency said: “In areas where a moderate amount of ash is expected to fall, please take measures to protect yourself, such as using umbrellas or masks and making sure to drive slowly.”
About 600 people live in a four-kilometre radius around Sakurajima, which falls under alert level 3 on a scale of 5, and whose crater has been banned since 2016.
Japan is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire and there are 110 active volcanoes on its territory.
