Part of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed to build a road to transport environmentalists to Belém, where the 30th edition of the United Nations climate conference, COP30, is being held, United States President Donald Trump said on Sunday, in a post on his social network, Truth Social.
“They destroyed the Amazon rainforest in Brazil to build a four-lane highway for environmentalists. This has become a huge scandal!” Trump wrote.
With this comment, Trump posted a video clip on Fox News criticizing the construction of the so-called Freedom Street.
This road connects Alça Viária with Avenida Perimetral, near the Federal University of Pará, making it easy to reach Belém from Ananindeua and Marituba. It is also within easy reach of the south of the state, the port of Vila do Conde and Baixo Tocantins.
Pará Governor Helder Barbalo (MDB) responded to Trump’s statement, also on social media.
“Instead of talking about ways, the US president should point out ways to combat climate change,” the governor said. “It could celebrate the historic decline in deforestation in the Amazon region – with a focus on the state of Pará, which achieved its best result.”
Barbalo suggested that Trump follow the example of the Brazilian government and invest more than R$ 1 billion to save forests around the world.
He concluded by saying that the American President is invited to participate in the conference and try some cuisine from Para.
“There is still time to go to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), President Trump. We are waiting for you with Takaka. Better to act than to spread.”
