The first time Kevin Carroll and Debbie Weber saw each other, they fell in love. It was 1967, and they were both in high school and members of their school’s theater group.

“I was at a boys’ school and Deb was at a girls’ school,” Kevin told BBC Outlook. “And in a phone call, when we were all in the hall taking tests, I said to a friend of mine: ‘Do you see that girl? “I’ll take her to the school party.”

She told Outlook that Depp’s reaction was similar: “I was sitting alone in the hall because I didn’t know any of the girls at school who went to the auditions, but I remember when I saw him he looked like the nicest guy I’d ever seen.”

Not only did they go to the party together, but from then on they wanted to do everything in each other’s company. They even planned to run away to a town in Maryland where people could get married at 15 without asking their parents’ permission.

But two weeks before their plan was to be implemented, the news of Depp’s pregnancy thwarted everything and ended with their separation for more than 40 years, a difficult period during which their love for each other remained ever present.
