Horsetail is a medicinal plant known for its diuretic effect. It helps get rid of excess fluids in the body, and is useful in cases of swelling and water retention.
“It is a plant rich in silicon, a mineral essential for healthy skin, nails, hair and bones. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can contribute to protecting cells and alleviating mild inflammatory processes,” explains Dr. Isolda Prado, nutritionist and director of ABRAN (Brazilian Association of Dietetics).
The most traditional and safe way to consume mackerel is through steeping the dried plant, as a tea. It can also be found in capsules or liquid extracts, but it is essential that any form of use be subject to professional supervision.
“Although it is natural, it should be used with guidance. It is important to stress that it does not replace medications or treat clinical conditions on its own,” he says.
Who should avoid?
Although it is a natural plant, it is not without risks. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children, and people with kidney failure, low blood pressure, or who use diuretics or medications to control blood pressure should avoid taking it without medical evaluation.
“Prolonged use or in high doses can cause electrolyte imbalance, such as loss of potassium. This can lead to symptoms such as cramps, muscle weakness and even irregular heartbeat,” the specialist concludes.
