Flax and chia seeds have gained space in the diet of those looking for a healthy diet. Both are rich in fiber, good fats and antioxidants, and offer benefits ranging from cholesterol control to hormonal balance. But, after all, which is better for your health?
“It depends on the goal. Flax seeds are more suitable for those looking for hormonal balance, because they contain more lignans. Chia has a greater ability to absorb water, which promotes satiety. Both are excellent sources of nutrients and can be interchanged in the diet,” recommends Vanessa Giglio, a functional clinical nutritionist and nutritional geneticist.
Flax seeds are one of the richest plant sources of Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid), an essential fat with anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, it contains lignans, which are natural compounds that mimic estrogen and help balance hormones, which is especially beneficial for women during menopause.
Shea is known for its high ability to absorb water. When hydrated, it forms a gel rich in soluble fiber, which prolongs the feeling of fullness and helps control appetite.
Rich in calcium, magnesium and potassium, chia also helps with bone and muscle health, as well as contributing to balanced blood pressure.
