Whatever Lilypad turns out to be, which may not be as “bad” as it seems, the Toy Story saga has been marked by great villains. Although these are not simply just evil: they represent the stages of existential fear of games (and humans), such as abuse, forgetfulness, replacement, loss of love, and the passage of time. Who are each of them?
Toy Story (1995) – Sid Phillips
The first big villain in this saga is Sid, the boy next door who enjoys destroying and modifying toys. It represents Woody and Buzz’s deepest fears: that they will be viewed as nothing more than lifeless objects.
Toy Story 2 (1999) – Janitor Al McQuiggin and Stinky Pete
In the sequel, the villain appears to be Al McQuiggin, the greedy owner of “Al’s Toy Barn,” who kidnaps Woody to sell him to a museum in Japan. But the real antagonist is later revealed: Stinky Pete, the miner, who appears to be a paternal sidekick, but is a resentful doll who was never sold, hates children and wants to force the group to live locked in a glass box.
Toy Story 3 (2010) – Lotso
Pink Bear is one of the most complex villains. Lotso leads the nursery Sunny side With a false façade of cuteness, he’s actually a manipulative dictator who controls the games like a tyrant. His history of abandonment makes him bitter and vengeful.
Toy Story 4 (2019) – Gabi Gabi
In Part 4, the “villain” seems more nuanced. Gabby Gabby, an antique doll with a defective voice, lives in an antique store and longs for a new owner. Although he manipulates and kidnaps Forky, he does so not out of spite but out of loneliness and a desire for love. She was eventually redeemed when Woody helped her find a girl to adopt.
