With Bolsonaro in the spotlight, PL insists on amnesty and avoids talking about 2026

With the preventive arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the allies, this week, began an offensive to pressure the president of the chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), to draft a bill for a “broad and unrestricted amnesty.”

Liberal Party President Waldemar Costa Neto and parliamentarians from the party met on Monday (24/11) in Brasilia. After the meeting, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro (RJ) told reporters that it was out of the question to discuss commutation of sentences, as proposed by the Rapporteur of the Dosimetry Bill (PL), Paulinho da Forsa (Solidariedade-SP).

Flavio also avoided commenting on who Bolsonaro’s successor will be. According to the parliamentarian, the name will be announced by the former president himself.

The project still has no say and has been on hold for more than a month, having lost space to other agendas, such as PL Antifaction.

  • The PL refuses to discuss reducing sentences and insists on a “broad and unrestricted” amnesty, despite the 27 years and 3 months prison sentence against Bolsonaro.

Before Bolsonaro was arrested in pretrial detention by the Federal Police (PF), on Saturday (22/11), Mota positively indicated the resumption of debate on the proposal. But given the erosion he has faced, both popularly and among his peers, by approving texts such as the proposal to amend the Blindagem constitution, it is unlikely that he will want to be removed in a pre-election year.

Bolsonaro imprisonment

The Federal Police, with the support of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (PGR), indicated that Bolsonaro was a flight risk in the face of the vigil called by Flavio in front of the apartment building where his father lives. The National Front stated that the crowd could create conditions conducive to an escape attempt.

The special court sentenced the former president to 27 years and 3 months in prison in September.

Moraes’ decision also cites electronic ankle bracelet violations. A video in the file, recorded by a server at the Center for Integrated Electronic Surveillance (Cime), shows Bolsonaro admitting to using a soldering iron to burn the device attached to his ankle. The ankle cuff should be changed in the early hours of the morning, hours before the PF procedure.
