The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeo Zema (Novo), criticized President Lula’s statement about the massive security operation in Rio de Janeiro, which left 121 people dead. In an interview with the article on Wednesday (12/11), Zima stated that the President should also have regretted the killing of the security personnel.
“The president should have mourned the lives of four public security professionals who lost their lives. The lives of these professionals with families who defend the state and the rule of law, good Brazilians, have been cut short,” the governor said.

Zima also stated that he considered the police work effective. “Now President Lula spoke in favor of the hundred and something there (117 others killed during the major police operation in Rio de Janeiro)… That was, for me, effective police work. Who was killed? Who was shot by the police.”
The governor defended the actions of the security forces. He said: “The police had a warrant, they were shot at and how would they react? Are they going to walk around and get shot? They won’t do that. They will resist, and that’s what happened. Everyone had the opportunity to turn themselves in, and many of them are in custody today, alive, because they turned themselves in. Only those who resisted lost their lives.”
Zema concluded by saying that he considered “such a statement from the main authority in Brazil to be unfortunate.”
