Luxury ship opens cruise season in Uruguay
The six-star ship is known for its luxurious suites
Uruguay officially opened its cruise season with the arrival of one of the most luxurious ships in the world, the Scenic Eclipse, at the port of Montevideo.
The six-star ship, known for its luxurious suites with capacity for 228 passengers, seven à la carte restaurants and amenities such as a submarine, arrived from Ilhabela, Brazil, bound for Buenos Aires.
This season, which lasts five months, involves a total of 147 stops across the country: 109 in Montevideo and 38 in Punta del Este.
Despite expectations of a slight decline in arrivals this season compared to last year, Uruguayan authorities have emphasized a strategic focus on quality and sustainability.
Florencia Ualde, general director of the Ministry of Tourism, said that, although a smaller number of vessels is planned, “improvements are being implemented and work is being done to ensure that this is a sustainable policy”. Christian Pos, National Director of Tourism, highlighted that the objective is to consolidate Uruguay as a strategic destination that offers quality, safety and unique experiences to passengers.
Local authorities hailed the start of the season as a crucial economic boost. Constante Mendiondo, vice-president of the National Ports Administration, highlighted that tourism generates important foreign exchange that is distributed as much as possible among the population.
Karina Fortete, Director of Tourism for the Municipality of Montevideo, stated that the cruise season offers an excellent opportunity for the private sector to showcase its diverse offer, which includes cultural tours, rural tourism, wineries and city museums.
In addition, Uruguay will promote the training of young people, with around 50 to 60 students participating in internships and recruitment programs in gastronomy and casinos during the season.
