Robe Iniesta, leader and founder of Extremoduro, an essential artist in Spanish music, died today at the age of 63. There are so many iconic songs that no one would be justified in listing them. Serve this compilation of some of your most relevant themes as a simple tribute.
“Jesucristo Garcia”
Extremoduro’s first great anthem, included in his first work, transgressive rock (1989). “A lot of this recording is due to people buying a record a few years ago that had never been recorded before. First I took out a model, took out the record and now it’s compact. Thank you also, as always, to those who speak to me”, written by Iniesta. It combines autobiographical elements with a reflection on what Jesus Christ would be like if he were born in today’s world.
‘I’m doing very well’
One of Extremoduro’s poppiest songs, made up of three songs in one. It’s a pearl of luck hidden in the group’s heritage: he never played one and was part of the group without holding it in very high esteem. It belongs to his fourth album, Where are my friends? (1993).
“Burn your memories”
One of the best songs from Extremoduro’s second album, We are animals (1991). It’s hard to say that sometimes we forget. And he is also famous for the expression “me se” (“me come la desidia”), a vulgarism that Iniesta included, to reclaim popular language.
‘Love, love, love and kiss the soul’
One of the group’s most famous songs, which Robe Iniesta recently used to close her solo concerts. Was released on Extremoduro’s second album, Deltoya (1992). Let’s assume one of the rare occasions where the words are not from Iniesta, but from the poet Manolo Chinato: he talks about freedom, love, nature or taking care of falling into the consumerist world.
‘Success’
Appears in Agilla (1996), the album that transformed Extremoduro into a mass band, coinciding with Iñaki’s record Uoh Antón, guitarist of Platero y Tú. In the lyrics of this work he mixes references to poets like Antonio Machado or Pablo Neruda, with countercultural authors like Sor Kampana, and also includes the reinterpretation of I stop, by Roberto Gonzalez Rockbertohead of Tabletom.
‘If you go’
The discotheque Defective hardwareas of 2011, the solo comprised six songs, all of considerable length. Every few minutes in the case of If you are…, Perhaps the best theme of the album, although it comes from the activism of Extremoduro, it has been classified, in a different way, as a “ballad”. In reality, it is a romantic love story, in the style of Robe.
“The Path to the Back Door”
One of the most talked about and appreciated songs of Extremoduro, both as cover of the album where it was included, Yo, absolute minority, 2002: it shows Dress Iniesta crucified, in calzoncillos and with two revolvers on both sides of the chair. We also remember the image that only the singer and Iñaki Uoho offered The way to the back door live: one in front of the other, chest exposed, hair on face and playing the guitar chords from the beginning of this song. The lyrics reflect the search for happiness and the uncertainty of making the right decision.
‘So payaso’
The song that skyrocketed Extremoduro’s fame, which is why a band sounded so disruptive on Los 40 Principales, the music channel with the most viewers. It contained no strong lyrics, but only a piano solo and, in general, a more universally accessible melody. The text speaks of a sentimental dependence which offers several interpretations, from platonic love to disappearance.
“Second movement: Lo de fuera”
Hicieron is six years away, after Yo, absolute minority (2002) for which the following album Extremoduro was released, The innate law (2008). Iniesta admitted that during this period he suffered a creative crisis while feeling he had nothing to say.. Finally, find inspiration and how. This song, lasting 11 minutes and 43 seconds, covers all the key themes of Iniesta’s record: punishment, sin, romance, lust, the individual’s conflict with himself, the prison metaphor, the Sun, the inevitability of losing love or the isolation that makes you strong and prevents you from reaching out to him face to face. In a way, I started the process here that culminated in 2021 with Mayeutics, Iniesta’s third solitary album, as philosophical and accomplished as The innate law.
‘An accompanied sigh’
With this song Iniesta opened his career in solitude under the name Robe in 2015 with the album What aletea in our heads. With his group of extremeño musicians, Robe calms down the sound of the electric guitar and delivers a more relaxed album, with romantic themes like this one, full of emotion. An accompanied sigh.
“Wasted time”
Excerpt from his second solo album, Destrozares, songs for the end of times (2016). Seven minutes where the singer loses his blood while offering his most intimate part: “Time wasted in lost causes | never regret me | not to be defeated, tired, forbidden”. Sublime.
“The power of art”
The most famous song from Iniesta’s most recent scene. It belongs to his fourth solo album, If the air takes us (2023), lasts 9.09 minutes and once again combines distinct musical and lyrical journeys, serving as a reflection: art as a great human adventure and the only space for redemption. Starts with violin, clarinet, guitar and lyrics on the trail. But he ends by telling how thanks to music we can recover, even if it’s a little, what we’re not there.
