Nemo, Swiss artist winner of Eurovision 2024announced last Thursday that he will return his trophy after confirming that Israel would participate in the festival in the midst of the war in Gaza. A few hours later, follow in his footsteps Charlie McGettigan, winner of the 1994 Song Festival.
The Irish artist announced the news on his social networks, where he published a video explaining the reasons for the return of the prize that the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) granted it more than thirty years ago.
“Last night, just before going to sleep, I read on Instagram that the winner of Eurovision 2024, called Nemo, to protest Israel’s participation at Eurovision 2026, will return the trophy awarded to him by the EBU”, began by voicing Charlie McGettigan on camera.
“He seemed to me to be a sincere and very intelligent person, and he presented his arguments very well, therefore, In support of Nemo, I also want to return my trophy at the EBU,” said the Irish artist.
McGettigan said that since receiving the award in 1994, he doesn’t know where he keeps it, but guaranteed that if it was found, he would also return it to the EBU, thus joining the protest against Israel’s participation in the Song Festival.
