Four months ago, Tres Cantos suffered a devastating fire that ravaged approximately 2,000 hectares in the area. Since then, everyone affected has worked intensively to clean and recover the damaged areas. And within the framework of these initiatives, the Community of Madrid … delivered 3,400 plants to regenerate the residential area of Soto de Viñuelas, affected by the fire.
This action is part of the measures announced by the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, on August 14 during her visit to the municipality. Thus, the Madrid Institute for Rural, Agrarian and Food Research and Development (IMIDRA) donated 900 photinia bushes and 900 viburnum bushes as part of the agreement between the regional public body and the Federation of Municipalities of Madrid (FMM). In addition, it distributed 1,600 additional native plants, from the nurseries of Arganda del Rey and El Escorial, such as hawthorn, blackthorn, arbutus, cistus, laurel, hydrangea, kermes oak and hawthorn.
In addition, IMIDRA is working on the regeneration of the burned area with other actions such as collecting seeds along the Bodonal stream. These actions are in addition to others already carried out by the Regional Executive, such as the water rate premium for disaster victims, which will allow them to reduce the amount of the variable part of their bill by 80% for one year; or the delivery of 21 Colmenar sheep to the breeder concerned to be able to continue his professional work.
Despite the severity of the events, the fire mainly affected grass and bushes. According to Madrid’s Minister of the Environment, Carlos Novillo, “there were a lot of unburned areas in the interior”, so “there is a large part of the tree vegetation that will be able to survive”. To avoid future situations, the regional government will modify the law on forestry and nature protection so that it is obligatory to take certain preventive measures, and to apply directly, as an administration, others such as the increase in logging – to have cleaner forests – and extensive livestock farming – which consumes biomass.
The regulatory change, which will be ready in about a year and a half, aims to provide a more appropriate legal framework for the management of the community’s forest area. You will see how to make certain defense infrastructures obligatory by law for private owners or municipalities, or to be able to do so in a subsidiary manner, or to prohibit certain uses.
