
A five-month pregnant woman was found dead in her home this Tuesday morning (12/23), in Rocinha, southern zone of Rio de Janeiro. The victim was identified as Géssica Oliveira de Souza, 36. The baby she was expecting didn’t survive either.
According to firefighters, the team was called around 9 a.m. to respond to an incident in Travessa da Escada. When the rescuers arrived on the scene, they found that Géssica was already dead. The body had a wire attached to the neck and signs of stab wounds, according to initial reports.

The victim was transported to the maternity ward of the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, in Gávea. The unit’s management said doctors assessed the condition of the fetus, but concluded there was no possibility of saving it. The baby’s body was sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML).
The Military Police, through the Pacification Police Unit (UPP), were also called after the victim’s arrival at the hospital. According to the Prime Minister, the case is initially treated as a possible femicide. Géssica’s companion is named as the main suspect and is said to have fled the scene after the crime.
Police teams are searching the area to try to locate the suspect. The incident was initially registered at the 11th DP (Rocinha) and then transferred to the Capital Homicide Police Station (DHC), which will be responsible for investigations.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crime.
