Once again, Abra offered a unique image to close the calendar of Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club. The traditional Régate du Coq, one of the most special and participatory events of the season, brought together 75 boats and around … 500 sailors, who participated in the spectacular start under the Vizcaya Bridge, in an already classic image of Biscay sport for more than four decades.
With a southerly wind of around 6 knots, with occasional gusts of up to 10, the boats departed from the Benedicta dock in Sestao and faced a 7-mile course, in which the wind intensity decreased at the entrance to the Abra. In the final ranking, Jon Garai’s Thelonious won in the Regatta class; the Andarax Bi, by Santiago Portularrume, in Crucero I; the Kohen, by Juan Carlos Estefanía, in Crucero II, and the Mandovi dalecandELA, by José Azqueta, in the J80 division.
The regatta once again demonstrated its immense popular appeal, with hundreds of supporters and walkers following the start from both banks of the estuary, in Getxo and Portugalete. The day ended at the club headquarters with the traditional bean festival and prize giving, putting the finishing touches to the nautical year at Abra.
