The protection of this area is in the hands of Maurizélia de Brito. For decades, she has closely followed the natural cycles of the atoll, dedicating herself to the conservation and monitoring of species whose survival depends on the reserve.
The power of biodiversity in a small space
Even with its small size, the atoll is home to thousands of seabirds who use the place as an obligatory stopover. This is where the largest colony of masked boobies in Brazil is located, coexisting with other species that find refuge in the small portions of land that emerge with the tide.
On the reefs, life beats. Sharks, turtles, fish and other animals take advantage of the protected environment to feed, rest and complete their cycles. This balance is only possible thanks to the absence of human pressure and the maintenance of the area as a complete reserve.
A routine shaped by nature
Life on the atoll requires constant adaptation. Access is limited and depends on specific conditions, making each entry and exit a delicate operation. At the support base level, resources are minimal, requiring careful control and planning.
Zelinha lived this daily life again and again, learning to respect nature’s time. Wind, tides and wildlife have become part of the routine, influencing decisions and shaping work dynamics.
