Conduct of the STF
“Moraes called Galípolo 6 times in one day about the Master, says the newspaper; the minister denies the calls” (Economia, 12/23). The minister’s explanations were not enough. Someone must act. Where are the authorities in this country?
Humberto Sanchez (Araçatuba, SP)
“The silent bench of the STF” (Elio Gaspari, 12/23). Of course a code of conduct would be good, I don’t even think it would need all that visibility, the STF could do it internally. The scary thing is that the initiative came from a judge who saw (opinions?) Lava Jato with sympathy, and make no mistake, Lava Jato was the biggest hoax sponsored by Brazilian justice, anyone who saw it without suspicion was, to say the least, naive, in fact, anyone who believes in heroes is always naive.
Anísio Franco Câmara (São Paulo, SP)
The minister and the president of British Columbia confirmed Moraes’ consultation on the strange Magnitsky law. Galípolo, like it or not, is an authority on international financial policy. There is nothing wrong with the minister consulting on something that affects him and his family. The president of the BC and the minister of the STF confirmed the conversation and the content. The rest is rest. Just another attempt by the regulars to damage the reputation of those who fight them on our behalf.

Lula 2026
“Lula begins the year with an advantage in the stories, but with an open account” (Transmitted frequently, 12/22) When it comes to foreign policy, Lula’s responsibility is delicate, mainly because the role of Congress in Brazilian foreign policy is that of total omission. Deputies and senators ignore their obligations as co-responsible for Brazil’s strategic and geopolitical importance to the world.
Ricardo Fraga (Belo Horizonte, MG)
Corruption
“The powerful protect themselves and corruption spreads” (editorial of 12/23). The institutions are finally functioning, democratically, to the great despair of the tireless putschists.
José Bueno (São Paulo, SP)
The world of the powerful is enveloped in corruption, everywhere, see the Epstein case. The danger is to turn your fight into a crusade. Last time this was left to us by Bolsonaro and his family.
Karina Kanazawa Rienzo (São Paulo, SP)
Brazil’s “capybara” is severe, with corruption entrenched in the executive, legislative and judicial branches. There is no way to deny the list of barbarities presented in the editorial, the pact of impunity.
Maria Meireles (São Paulo, SP)
Havaianas
“The Republic of Havaianas” (Mariliz Pereira Jorge, 12/23). Mariliz, as almost always, is clear and objective in her text. In addition to many panicked people, Brazil has no chance of political success, because we have many thieves and corrupt people in all branches of the Republic. This is getting really difficult.
Hannah Korich (Mairiporã, SP)
They distracted from the strange money in the MP’s trash bag, but when it came to creativity and good humor, we on the left took that for granted.
Adilson Roberto Gonçalves (Campinas, SP)
Christmas
“Technological Santa” (Totão, 12/23). I was moved to read the letter Tostão claims to have sent to Santa Claus, asking for less violence, crime and corruption. I think the corruption of the powerful, who already earn exorbitant salaries, is the seed of all other problems.
Jaime Florencio Martins (Aréado, MG)
Polarization
“’Datafolha: Polarization affects 74% of Brazilians, with PT members outpacing Bolsonaro supporters” (Politics, 12/24). We must be very careful with left and right extremists, easily recognizable when they deny and accept the countless misdeeds of their leaders, Bolsonaro and Lula. There is a risk of dictatorships like Cuba and Pinochet’s Chile.
Carlos Eduardo Cunha (São Paulo, SP)
Nicotine
“21 years without smoking” (Ruy Castro, 12/24). I smoked for 20 years, smoking was a crutch and I smoked a lot, three packs a day. I quit 31 years ago, surprisingly, it wasn’t difficult, but even after all this abstinence, after-effects appeared. If you smoke, quit today, enjoy the appointment and treat yourself.
Celso Balloti (São Paulo, SP)
On this side, during the pandemic I began to imitate the pleasure of parties and dinners, very common in my other life – a simple detail, to begin with –, always on Fridays, alone, dancing on the floor. Pretending has become a companion to escape from work and, at the same time, from a relationship. Comical and banal, if not tragic.
Daniele Caroline Lima (São Paulo, SP)
