During the execution of the warrants, additional individuals were identified and questioned for having received monies from the criminal scheme. The investigation indicates that the perpetrators presented themselves as the police chief and embarrassed the victims by threatening them with arrest in the act if they did not make bank transfers.
Understand the case:
- The investigation, which lasted months, revealed that the system was implemented from the prison of São Leopoldo (RS).
- The main suspect, a 37-year-old man, was already in prison and has a criminal record for theft.
- The scam started on social networks, notably on Facebook and Instagram, where the criminals selected their victims from the Federal District, focusing on the Sobradinho region.
- After an initial contact, exchanging messages of affection and creating a bond of trust, the conversations migrated to WhatsApp – without the exchange of intimate images, according to the police.
Intimidation
Armed with the victim’s telephone number, the suspects began to act in an intimidating manner. Using the photo of the police chief of the 35th DP and images of the front of the police station, they contacted each other by telephone, introducing themselves as police chief Ricardo Vianna. During the calls, they claimed that one of the callers was a minor and that the parents had recorded incidents, creating a falsely serious scenario to extort the victims.
