Little Laura Rebeca Ribeiro dos Santos, aged 1 year and 4 months, died of asphyxiation with the baby’s comfort belt in a clandestine private daycare, was waiting for a place in the public school system of the Federal District.
The information was transmitted by the child’s grandmother, Aparecida Maria, to the Metropolises. In a statement, the DF Department of Education confirmed that the child was in the daycare queue.
“The aforementioned child was waiting for a place in a public crèche, had his registration validated in April and was regularly registered for care according to the flow of calls from the network, depending on the places available,” specifies the ministry.
“The offer varies depending on the age of the child, the school region and the reception capacity of each unit,” he added.
The secretariat also informed that in the region of Ceilândia, Pôr do Sol and Sol Nascente, there are 48 public daycare centers, with 6,341 places.

- Laura died while in the care of a caregiver who turned her home into an illegal daycare.
- The girl died on Thursday afternoon (11/12), at QNO 6 set P in Setor O, Ceilândia.
- The girl’s mother, Lorrany Stephane, who is a single mother, had to go to work and had no one to leave her daughter with.
- Normally a grandmother would stay with the child, but that day she had another commitment and couldn’t stay with the baby.
- Faced with the situation, Lorrany looked for an alternative and entrusted the young girl to the care of someone recommended by a colleague.
The house where the baby lived was a sort of clandestine daycare. A caregiver received children for a private service not authorized by public organizations.
According to her mother, the tragedy occurred on the first day Laura was in the care of others.
“I needed to work, I had no one to entrust him to. That’s why I agreed to take him there. The girl said that she was a reference, that she had a camera, that I could trust, and she even promised to send me photos of Laura,” he reported.
Preliminary information indicates the girl died while hanging on to the baby comfort belt after sleeping in the equipment. The caregiver reportedly reported to the police that two hours after putting the girl to sleep, she returned to check on her because she found it strange that she was taking a long time to wake up. When he arrived at the scene, he found the girl already dead.
The girl’s family was called and upon arriving at the scene, the father and grandmother found the child’s body on the sofa in the house.
The girl’s grandmother, Aparecida Maria, reported that Laura had a large bruise on her neck and blood on her nose. “There is no way to understand that someone would take care of a child and let him die of asphyxiation like that. We are devastated. Laurinha was happy, healthy. It’s very difficult,” he said. Metropolises.
