A man accused of swallowing a Fabergé necklace has been arrested in New Zealand

New Zealand police have charged a 32-year-old man with stealing a Fabergé necklace and swallowing it to cover up the crime. The value of the piece is more than US$19,000 (about R$100,000). The jewel has not yet been recovered.

The action happened on Friday afternoon (11/28), when employees of Partridge Jewelers noticed the man putting the item in his mouth and called the police. Within minutes, officers arrived at the scene and were able to arrest the suspect inside the store.

The necklace is associated with the classic James Bond movie. The piece is made of 18-karat yellow gold and decorated with green enamel. In addition, it contains 60 white diamonds and 15 blue sapphires.

Inside the pendant is a miniature octopus made of 18-karat gold, with black diamond eyes.

Authorities indicate that the man is not new to crimes. He is also suspected of stealing an iPad from the same jewelry store in early November and stealing pet products the next day.

The suspect was remanded in custody and will appear again in Auckland District Court on Monday, December 8 to face charges. Meanwhile, the jewelry store and police continue to wait to recover the valuable necklace.
