A meteor crossed the northeastern sky on Monday evening (8) and was recorded by surveillance cameras led by astrophotographer Alexsandro Mota, in Conceição do Coité, about 210 km from Salvador (BA).
The lightning could be observed by residents of different towns in Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Bahia and Piauí, according to reports received by Mota and observer networks.
In the video in which he released the record, the astrophotographer states that the object was “a large meteor” that entered the Earth’s atmosphere at very high speed. “These phenomena occur when a space rock, which can vary in diameter from a few centimeters to several meters, enters the atmosphere at speeds of several thousand kilometers per hour,” he explained.
Mota says the observed features rule out the space debris hypothesis. “In this case, we had a meteor that lasted a few seconds and was very fast, in addition to not showing significant fragmentation. Generally, space debris is much slower and fragments in the sky,” he said.
According to the astrophotographer, the passage of the object caused a sudden increase in brightness, “transforming night into day” for a few moments.
Bramon (Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network) confirmed that the event was recorded in its system under ID 9537-2025. The page brings together 19 reports sent by observers and automatic cameras distributed in Ceará, Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Piauí and Pernambuco.
The network also analyzes the data to determine details such as the trajectory, altitude of the explosion and possible fragmentation. So far, there is no indication that parts of the meteor hit the ground.
The material collected by Mota must be integrated into network analyses.
