Build and develop the Rome Metro It is one of the most complicated tasks in urban architecture, only because excavating the city also means finding archaeological remains and finds, but in addition to being a challenge, it is also an opportunity for new discoveries and research about the capital of the Roman Empire.
And this is what happened with the expansion of Rome Metro Line Cwhich inaugurated in December two new stops and stations, Coliseum and Porta Metronia, between the Imperial Forums and the Aurelian Wallswhich attracted attention for their appearance, being more typical of a museum than a public transport station.
Eleven years of work for the new Colisée metro station
The construction of the Colisée stop took almost longer than the Roman monument itself, since it took eleven years of work to inaugurate this new station on line C, which is constantly expanding, and which was also the site of the discovery of important archaeological remains.
Located under the Via the Fori Imperialibetween the Coliseum and the Basilica of Maxentiusthe station connects to the existing stop of line B and another of the new ones, Porta Metronia, next to the Aurelian Wallswhich is located about a kilometer away.
The new stations Coliseum And Metronia Porta of line C of the Rome metro have attracted attention for their appearance, being a sort of route of archaeological discoveries up to the platform, a museum while we go to take the metro, which has a clear purpose: “This covering, which is the same as that of the floor, wants to convey precisely this idea: the idea of entering inside an excavation”, he explained Marco Cervoneconstruction manager of construction company We buildduring the inauguration.
The Colosseum stop of the C line is specifically located at a depth of 32 meters and is distinguished by its gold finishes and contemporary finishes in a large hall which form an interesting contrast with the archaeological remains on display.
The same relevant mix found in the Porta Metronia station, which has five underground levels and which incorporates a glass window in which the discovery of the Commander’s Housewith frescoes and mosaic paving stones, which formed a vast military complex dating from the 2nd century AD connected to the barracks of the emperors Trajan And Hadrianand where the imperial guard was housed.
You can also see different objects there such as vases, artifacts, figures and even a bronze sheet jug more than 2,300 years old, since during the excavations up to 28 wells dating from the 5th and 2nd centuries BC were found, and where water was collected by the inhabitants of that time.
The complexity of the expansion of the Rome metro
The inauguration of these two new metro stations of line C in Rome also demonstrates the great complexity that this requires, in addition to a line whose construction is still pending with another objective such as the inauguration of the metro station. Venice Squarewhich is planned for 2033.
In fact, for construction, a technique known as “top-down archaeological” is used, specific to allow the work to continue even during the investigation of archaeological discoveries, and the two activities can take place in parallel, since it allows digging from top to bottom, building intermediate structures which, in turn, guarantee the stability of the land.
