A podcast analyzing the map of organized crime in Royal Jordanian – Folha – 04/12/2025 – The Podcast

One-third of the population of the greater Rio de Janeiro area currently lives under the control or influence of armed groups. The data appears in the new edition of the historical map of armed groups in Rio, released on Thursday (4), just over a month after the country’s deadliest police operations, aimed at combating the expansion of the Red Command, resulted in the deaths of 121 people in and between the Alemão complexes.

The survey, conducted by the Study Group on New Illegal Movements at the Federal University of Fluminense (Geni/UFF) and the Fogo Cruzado Institute, charts the expansion of armed control in the region and points out salient features that help explain the decline and growth of militias and criminal factions.

The release of this year’s edition comes amid discussions in Congress about projects submitted in the wake of the October 28 process – the Senate is expected to vote on Antifaction PL next week; The next day, a federal police operation revealed new suspicions about criminal groups infiltrating politics.

This fifth part develops a map of armed groups, and in an interview with sociologist Daniel Hirata, professor at UFF University and coordinator of GENIE, recounts the scenario of armed occupation in Rio de Janeiro, explains how the strategies of these groups are being replicated across the country, and discusses the effectiveness of the projects under discussion to confront militias and factions.
