The plenary session of the Balearic Parliament this Tuesday, marked by the validation of one of the key economic decrees of the government of Marga Prohens, also left a scene that interrupted the parliamentary solemnity for a few seconds. Just a moment after the vote on the text, and while the PP deputies applauded the result, the voice of George Michael burst from the speakers at full volume with the classic Wham! last Christmas.
The “responsible” was the parliamentary spokesperson of the PP, Sebastià Sagreras, who brought his cell phone closer to his microphone, activating it and thus playing one of the most recognizable Christmas songs in contemporary pop. Far from being an error or an accidental gesture, it is a joke that the popular deputy repeats every year during the last plenary session before the Christmas holidays, and which has already become a kind of informal tradition in the Autonomous Chamber. After which, the President of Parliament, Gabriel Le Senne, concluded the session and wished “a merry Christmas to everyone”.
last Christmas was written in 1984 by George Michael, one of the great musical figures of the 80s and cultural icon of the LGTBI collective, who added an ironic nuance to the scene (in June 2023, PP and Vox voted against the display of the flag of the collective on the facade of the Chamber – although the popular supported its elevation in 2024 -. Two months later, the conservatives and the far right removed the rainbow colors from the flag LGTBI of a pedestrian crossing in Mallorca.
The musical accompaniment, which provoked some gestures of surprise in the room and smiles among the parliamentarians of the popular bank – but not among those of the opposition -, took place immediately after the vote of the decree aimed at simplifying and rationalizing the treatment of strategic projects, which brought down the far right almost three months ago when it considered that its linguistic demands on the islands were not satisfied. Its validation – with the votes of the PP and Vox – had sparked an intense debate in the House a few moments before.
The conservatives had just come to terms with the blocking of the spending cap by the far right and, with the new alliance, they sought to avoid projecting an image of institutional paralysis.
