Gimnasia began presenting its squad for the 2026 season with the first official confirmation: the continuity of Enzo Martínez (27). The Uruguayan defender, who joined the club in September 2024 on an initial 18-month contract, will remain with the institution beyond December 31, the date on which his contract expired. In addition, Lobo secured part of the central defender’s pass (worth just over $500,000 at 100 percent), an important point within the agreement for Fernando Zaniratto’s team.
For Martínez, the renewal represents a rare event in his professional career, as it is only the second time that he has managed to stay at the same club for two seasons in a row. The only comparable experience he had was in his early days at Peñarol, where he stayed in the First Division for three years. At that time, the defender had not achieved continuity in the other seven clubs of his career, so his presence at Gimnasia marks a period of stability and mutual trust.
Martinez’s career

Originally from Artigas, Martínez began his professional career at Peñarol de Montevideo, a facility where he spent most of his youth training. With the Manya jersey, the defender, born on April 29, 1998, played 26 games, scored one goal and won two titles from 2018 to 2020. After three seasons in the top tier of Eastern football, he packed his bags to cross the Atlantic and move to Portugal to CD Tonelda of the Primeira Liga. In his first international experience he played 31 games.
The 1.83 meter tall left-hander ended his stay in the Portuguese country to travel to Argentina in 2021 and join the Vélez Sarsfield team, a team that he represented three times for points and contributed one goal. After this brief move, in 2021 he traded the land of asados and locros for that of tacos and enchiladas, where he remained for three seasons. In the first two games he defended the Querétaro jersey 22 times, while in the third he played six games for Pachuca until 2023.
After a three-year absence, Enzo returned home in 2023, the year he signed a contract with Defensor Sporting. In the purple box He played 10 games. Liverpool, then champions of Uruguayan football, was his next destination. He played 21 duels for Negro de la Cuchilla until he signed with Lobo for 18 months in September 2024.
If he plays more than 10 games, it is the club where he has played the most games: he only reached 31 in Portugal, 26 in Peñarol, 22 in Querétaro and 21 in Liverpool, where he was able to play the most games. Without the torn cruciate ligament, he would certainly have overcome it over time in gymnastics. He currently has 20 games and one goal.
