Authorities say a Russian general has been killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow.
According to the Russian Investigative Committee, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was the victim of an attack with an explosive device planted under a car on Monday morning.
Sarvarov, 56, was head of the operational training department of the Russian armed forces, the committee added.
Authorities also said one of the theories being investigated is that Ukrainian intelligence services were involved in planting the bomb. This country has not yet commented on the matter.
The soldier died of his injuries in hospital, the committee said, adding that an investigation had been launched into murder and illegal explosives trafficking.
The attack occurred in a parking lot near an apartment block in the south of the Russian capital.
Images from the area show a badly damaged white car with its doors torn off, surrounded by other vehicles.
According to Russian media, Sarvarov took part in combat operations during the Ossetia-Ingush conflict and the Chechen wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, and also led operations in Syria between 2015 and 2016.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, several military officers have been attacked in the Russian capital.
General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bombing in Moscow in April, while General Igor Kirillov died in December 2024 when a device hidden in a skateboard was remotely detonated.
A Ukrainian source later told the BBC that Kirillov had been assassinated by the Ukrainian security service, although this was never officially confirmed.
For political reasons, Ukraine never officially admits or accepts responsibility for targeted attacks.
