A student at Kentucky State University, a historically black university in the United States, was killed and another was seriously injured in a shooting this Tuesday (9), according to local authorities.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said a suspect had been arrested. Michael R. DeCourcy, a spokesman for the school, confirmed the death of one student and that another is in serious but stable condition. According to preliminary information, the shooter was not a student. The attack, which occurred during exam week, took place in front of one of the dormitories.
Police in Frankfurt, the city where the university is located, said they responded to a report of an “active assailant” and confirmed the arrest of a suspect. Authorities isolated the campus and ordered buildings closed.
In another shooting in August near the same dormitory, two people who were not students were injured, police said.
The university was founded in 1886, according to its website. It has more than 2,200 students and 450 teachers and staff. The campus occupies an area of 411 hectares, the equivalent of nearly 600 football fields.
