Madrid, December 13 (EFE). – Activists from the organization Animal Equality gathered at Puerta del Sol in Madrid to denounce the mistreatment and violence against animals in slaughterhouses and farms across Spain. This is a unique protest that offered “a minute of listening” instead of a minute of silence.
In front of a large banner calling for “Rights for Animals,” “the real, heartbreaking sounds of animals’ cries for help” recorded in slaughterhouses were heard, as well as posters with images taken by NGO activists on farms.
A hundred black-clad activists have denounced on the occasion of International Animal Rights Day that “the livestock industry has built high walls so that what happens in slaughterhouses cannot be heard,” while on farms they are “crammed into small cages and treated like objects.”
The actress Elisabeth Larena, known for her work in series such as “La que se cerca”, “Intimacy” and “Serve and Protect”, was commissioned to read a manifesto with which she wants to “give a voice” to this suffering, because “the animals with whom we share the planet have a voice.”
Every year millions of animals suffer “mutilation, isolation and overcrowding,” but in this case “the oppressed cannot organize, rebel or take to the streets to fight for their rights,” the manifesto says.
The aim of the rally is to “demand from the government changes in the law to advance animal protection,” said the NGO’s co-founder, Javier Moreno.
“It is the government’s responsibility to protect animals and legislate in their favor by listening to citizens and not just the interests of the livestock industry,” the organization said.
Another year: “We have made visible the violence suffered by animals in the livestock industry and demanded justice for them. Another year we have demanded that all animals be equal in what matters, in the ability to suffer and enjoy,” the organizers conclude. EFE
