Part of the “open source” world is, as they say, “voting with your feet.”
When Thomas Dohme, CEO of GitHubreleased its manifesto “Developers, Reinvented”, probably did not imagine the impact of its most controversial statement: “You must adopt AI, otherwise you are excluded” (referring to staying “out of business”). For GitHub – and, by extension, Microsoft – the future of software development software it is so intrinsically linked to AI that those who do not adopt it will be left behind.
However, even though executive speeches vehemently promote this vision, a significant portion of the software open source reacts with a mixture of worry and weariness.
And some projects are already taking radical measures: abandon GitHubthe largest collaborative development platform in the world.
GitHub CEO’s Ultimatum: Adapt or Leave
Dohme’s message leaves no room for soft interpretations. According to the text itself, GitHub surveyed 22 developers who are already integrating AI into their daily work. From this testimony, the CEO paints a scenario in which AI will go beyond simply writing fragments of code and will automate up to 90% of development within 2 to 5 yearstransforming the role of the programmer: less code writing, more design systems, agent management, results verification and mastering AI.
Dohmke even suggests that many won’t want to adapt, and that’s okay… as long as they find another job. Of course, this rhetoric sounds more like an ultimatum than a transition plan. …
