The City of Ipojuca announced, this Monday (29/12), the adoption of immediate measures following the episode of aggression involving a couple of tourists from Mato Grosso on the beach of Porto de Galinhas, on the coast of Pernambuco.
Among the measures taken by the town hall, there is the suspension of the stand involved in the incident for a period of one week and the formal communication to the stand for the immediate and preventive expulsion of the servers and attendants involved until the conclusion of the investigations.
The incident occurred last weekend, when a tourist couple was attacked after getting into trouble with merchants over the price charged for renting chairs on the beach, and received national attention after reports and videos posted on social media by the tourists themselves.
After learning of the episode, the municipal administration indicated that it began to follow the case “directly” and to “strengthen inspection actions and adopt administrative measures to guarantee the investigation of the facts and the maintenance of public order”.
In an official note, the town hall declared that it rejected any form of violence and reaffirmed its commitment to security, respect for visitors and the defense of consumer rights.
The other measures announced are:
- Strengthening inspection actions on the seafront, with an increase in the number of municipal guards and the environmental service operating in the area;
- Intensification of surveillance to combat irregular practices, such as tied sales and minimum consumption requirements; And
- Strengthening actions to monitor compliance with the Consumer Code, including the actions of people acting irregularly as “flannels”
According to the town hall, these actions are part of a set of measures that have been adopted by municipal management to “strengthen security, the organization of beach commerce and a good visitor experience”.
“Ipojuca City Hall will continue to act in an integrated manner with inspection and security bodies to avoid new episodes and guarantee that Porto de Galinhas continues to be a tourist destination guided by respect and hospitality,” the note states.
Attack on tourists
In a statement about what happened, the couple who were victims of the attacks harshly criticized the municipal administration, saying that in Porto de Galinhas, “tourists are treated like trash.”
“Guys, that’s all, look. Look next year to see if things have improved here, because if it hasn’t improved, don’t come, okay? Don’t come. Now the population is wonderful, the city, the beaches are beautiful. Unfortunately, there is no administration, there is no care, there is no supervision. Tourists are treated like trash,” said Cleiton Zanatta.
According to the couple from Mato Grosso, they had rented tents and chairs to spend the day at the beach. During the settlement, Johnny and Cleiton were attacked by traders for questioning the price charged for renting beach utensils.
According to the couple, the final value was almost double the price initially agreed upon. When Johnny said he would only pay the agreed amount, the businessman disagreed with the tourists and began assaulting them by throwing a chair at them, followed by further attacks from his colleagues, who joined in beating the couple.
