This Saturday, the federal police executed ten house arrest warrants ordered by the Federal Court (STF) as part of the coup plot process. These actions take place after the attempted escape of the former director of the Federal Highway Police, Silvinei Vasques, arrested yesterday in Paraguay while trying to board a flight to El Salvador, and aim to prevent further escapes.
The targets are those found guilty of being part of cores 2, 3 and 4 of the coup plan aimed at keeping former President Jair Bolsonaro in power until the end of 2022. Members of core 1, which includes Bolsonaro, have already started serving their sentences.
Among the people targeted by the house arrest warrants are the former advisor to the Presidency of the Republic Filipe Martins, the PF delegate Marilia Ferreira de Alencar and the soldiers Giancarlo Gomes Rodrigues, Angelo Martins Denicoli, Fabricio Moreira de Bastos, Sergio Ricardo Cavaliere, Bernardo Romão Correa Netto and Ailton Gonçalves Moraes Barros.
They have already been convicted for the criminal acts of the coup plot, but there is still the possibility of appealing before the final judgment (closure of the case).
Faced with the new fact of Silvinei’s escape attempt, Moraes ordered the house arrest of these targets, with the use of electronic ankle bracelets, issuance of passports, ban on visits, ban on the use of social networks and suspension of firearms possession documents.
Court decisions are respected in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Paraná, Goiás, Bahia, Tocantins and in the Federal District. Some measures benefited from the support of the Brazilian army.
In a video, Filipe Martins’ lawyer Jeffrey Chiquini called the decision “absurd” and “vindictive” and said there was “no change in the factual situation” against his client.
— What does Filipe Martins have to do with the escape of another accused? — asked the defender and added:
— Filipe Martins always wore an electronic bracelet on his ankle and could not leave his town. Today, in the middle of recess, a week of celebration, he was put under house arrest, for no reason.
According to the decision, the former advisor to the Presidency will no longer be able to receive visits without judicial authorization or leave his home. He continues to use the electronic ankle bracelet. The warrant was reported by PF agents who went to his residence today, in Ponta Grossa (PR).
On Friday evening, the Paraguayan National Police handed over Silvinei Vasques to Brazilian authorities in Foz do Iguaçu (PR), after his arrest at Asunción International Airport, where he was taking a flight to El Salvador. Vasques traveled more than 1,300 kilometers from São José, in the Florianópolis metropolitan region, to the capital of Paraguay.
After the discovery of the escape, the federal traffic police officer was placed in preventive detention by Moraes and will be transferred to Brasilia this Saturday.
According to PF’s investigations, the escape plan involved creating a Paraguayan passport, leaving home on Christmas Eve, renting a car and tampering with the electronic ankle monitor, which stopped working midway, likely due to a lack of battery.
Silvinei was not the only Bolsonaro ally to flee the country after being the target of Supreme Court prosecution. Former Abin Director General and MP Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ), MP Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) and MP Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) also left Brazil. The first two parliamentarians now live freely in the United States and Zambelli is imprisoned in Italy.
