Former President Jair Bolsonaro was doing well overnight after surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia performed this Thursday, Christmas Day, at the DF Star Hospital in Brasilia. According to general surgeon Cláudio Birolini, the clinical picture in the immediate postoperative period is stable, with pain controlled by analgesics and episodes of hiccups, which remain under observation by the medical team.
— He went well, he had a few hiccups, the pain was controlled with painkillers — Birolini told GLOBO.
The operation began around 9:15 a.m. and ended shortly before 1:00 p.m., lasting approximately three and a half hours. According to doctors, the procedure was uneventful and went as planned. The procedure was performed under general anesthesia.
Although classified as elective, surgical intervention was indicated to avoid worsening of the condition and possible clinical complications. In the case of a bilateral inguinal hernia, the problem occurs on both sides of the groin and can progress with persistent pain. After the procedure, Bolsonaro was taken directly to his room, without needing to be admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU), remaining awake and communicative.
The postoperative period includes strict pain control through the use of analgesics, physiotherapy for early mobilization and measures to prevent complications, such as deep vein thrombosis and respiratory problems. The team expects Bolsonaro to remain hospitalized between five and seven days, depending on clinical progress.
According to the team, physiotherapy can be started in the coming hours, with emphasis on early mobilization, considered essential to reduce the risks linked to prolonged immobility in the post-surgical period. Clinical monitoring is continuous, with daily assessments of response to treatment.
In addition to recovering from surgery, doctors continue to pay attention to the persistent hiccups experienced by Bolsonaro in recent months. The symptom is treated as a recurring concern both by the medical team and by the former president himself. Initially, an immediate anesthetic blockade of the phrenic nerve, responsible for stimulating the diaphragm, a muscle essential for breathing, was considered.
However, after direct clinical observation, the team opted for a more conservative approach. The strategy includes intensification of drug treatment, dietary adjustments and monitoring of clinical response over the next few days. The need for any additional procedure will be reassessed as the situation evolves.
Doctors clarify that hiccups can be linked to changes in the digestive system and that to date there is no indication of neurological complications associated with this symptom. Additional examinations may be carried out during hospitalization.
Bolsonaro was hospitalized on Wednesday for tests and pre-operative preparation before the operation. The hospitalization was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Court (STF), after the expertise of the federal police highlighted the need for medical intervention. According to the minister, the authorization for hospitalization does not prevent the execution of the sentence pronounced against the former president, sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for attempted coup d’état.
During his hospitalization, Bolsonaro is accompanied by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro.
