President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) declared this Wednesday 17 that he does not discuss public security due to the lack of powers granted to the federal government. According to Lula, the approval of the Public Security PEC is necessary to define Planalto’s responsibilities in this matter. He once again promised the creation of the Department of Public Safety if the constitutional amendment was passed by Congress.
“I never wanted to discuss public security, because it was not the role of the federal government, because the Constitution does not give the federal government the right to interfere in public security. (…) This is why I want to approve the PEC, because after approving the PEC, which defines the role of the Union in matters of public security, we will create the Ministry of Public Security,” declared the president.
Lula also complained about the difficulties faced by ministers in discussing violence against women. According to the PT deputy, male ministers cannot discuss this subject with the Minister of Women, Márcia Lopes.
The president also said his potential opponents in 2026 have no news to offer voters. “I want to know what new things they are going to come up with,” Lula said.
