After the United States government withdrew, this Friday (12/12), the sanctions imposed on Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), and his wife, Viviane Barci de Moraes, on the basis of the Magnitsky law, Bolsonaro’s Internet users revolted against North American President Donald Trump on social networks.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) asked the American president to lift sanctions against the Brazilian authorities. With the improvement in relations between the two leaders, the Brazilian government was betting on a positive response, as shown in Metropolises last week, in Igor Gadelha’s column.
On Trump’s social networks, Brazilians were outraged by this decision, making comments on Instagram such as: “Unfollow, bye”, “Game over for Brazil”, “Why?”

“Have you lifted the sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes while he persecutes, tortures and arrests people here in Brazil? He has lost our respect!”, commented a user.

Trump lawyer speaks out after Magnitsky crash against Moraes
Another Internet user was outraged by this decision: “I thought you were strong! That you wouldn’t go back on your word. Anyway, I only follow those I admire.”
Internet users said they would stop following the US president on Instagram.
Magnitsky law
The application of the Magnitsky Act against Moraes and his wife, Viviane Barci de Moraes, follows threats made by the Trump administration due to the role of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court as rapporteur of the Golpita plot, which resulted in the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and his allies.
Moraes was sanctioned in July. Viviane and her family business, Lex Instituto de Estudos Jurídicas, were subject to sanctions in September this year.
With political justifications, the White House adopted measures in response to Bolsonaro’s arrest.
The Magnitsky Act is applied by the United States against foreigners outside the country accused by the Americans of human rights violations. The law provides, among the sanctions, the freezing of assets and accounts in the United States, the ban on entry into North American territory and the ban on doing business with American companies, including financial ones.
