The Minister of the Secretariat for Institutional Relations (SRI), Gleisi Hoffmann, reacted to the Senate’s decision to approve, this Wednesday, the bill on dosimetry (PL), which could reduce the sentences of people convicted of the acts of January 8, 2023, including former President Jair Bolsonaro. Shortly after the end of the vote, the minister harshly criticized the senators and anticipated that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had decided to veto the measure.
“President Lula will veto this project. Those found guilty of attacks against democracy will have to pay for their crimes,” the minister declared on her social networks. Furthermore, Gleisi said the parliamentarians did not respect the decision of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), which convicted Bolsonaro and other defendants of attempted coup d’état.
“The reduction in the sentences handed down against Jair Bolsonaro and other putschists, approved this evening in the Senate, is a lack of respect for the STF’s decision and constitutes a serious setback in legislation that protects democracy,” he said.
Finally, the minister blamed the leader of the government in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), who had contradicted the Palácio do Planalto and made a “regrettable error” in the negotiation of the project.
“The handling of this issue by the government leadership in the Senate at the CCJ was a regrettable error, contrary to the government’s orientations which were contrary to the initial proposal,” Gleisi explained.
The minister’s criticism refers to the fact that Wagner allowed the construction of an agreement on the issue during the treatment of the measure in the CCJ of the Senate.
Behind the scenes, it was agreed that Lula’s allies would not prevent the deliberations of the PL Dosimetria and that the Bolsonaristas would allow the vote on an essential question for the Executive to close its accounts in 2026 (which reduces federal tax benefits by 10% for several sectors).
