A passenger undergoing treatment for hyperthyroidism fainted at Brasilia airport early Thursday (12/11) after facing a series of cancellations during the trip between Florianópolis and Manaus. This situation occurred amid the cascading effect caused by the cyclone that hit São Paulo and disrupted the air network across the country.
Rayrison Soares Conceição, 34, was heading to Manaus, where he would have a decisive consultation to assess the need for surgery. He landed in Brasilia around 10 p.m. on Wednesday (12/10), after hours spent trying to reschedule his ticket. Amid so much stress, he began experiencing signs of paralysis – a complication linked to hyperthyroidism. At the height of his discomfort, he ends up passing out in the terminal.
First aid was provided by the airport medical team. Rayrison was then taken to the Núcleo Bandeirante UPA, where he received specialized support. He was released early in the afternoon and, with no accommodation available, returned directly to the terminal to attempt to continue his journey.
According to Inframérica, Brasilia airport concessionaire, this Thursday as of 7 p.m., 58 flights had been canceled and 12 others delayed due to the impacts of the cyclone.

Understanding the state
Hypokalemic thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a rare complication of hyperthyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid produces excess hormones. This disease causes sudden episodes of muscle weakness, particularly in the legs, and can progress to temporary paralysis of the limbs.
Attacks are usually triggered by factors such as severe stress, physical exertion or meals high in carbohydrates. In severe cases, patients may completely lose the strength needed to perform simple movements.
Treatment involves rapid potassium replacement and strict control of hyperthyroidism, and may include surgery in specific situations.
