Based on a combination of results, Internacional took the field in Beira-Rio knowing they had to win and hoping for direct stumbles in the fight against relegation. Abel Braga’s team fulfilled its role in front of just over 21 thousand fans, beating Bragantino 3-1.
Goals from Mercado, Alan Patrick and Carbonero gave Colorado the lead throughout the game. Bragantino still scored with John John, but it wasn’t enough to threaten the home team’s dominance.
In addition to the victory in Porto Alegre, the club had to closely monitor the outcome of the confrontations between its direct competitors. The defeats of Ceará and Fortaleza completed the ideal scenario, allowing Internacional to ensure its permanence in the national elite in the home stretch of the Brasileirão.
After the match, in an interview with Globo, Alan Patrick spoke about Internacional’s situation in the home stretch of the championship.
“Ending with a feeling of relief. Of course, this is not the reality that we wanted, that the club deserves. We did not foresee this at the start of the season. We know how difficult it is, in a period of difficulty, of confidence, with all the emotions that that implies. Having to fight against relegation is a situation that is not the reality of this great club,” he said.
Inter makes history by avoiding the fall despite starting the round at Z-4
Internacional achieved an unprecedented feat in the Brazilian Championship since the adoption of the 20-team consecutive points format in 2006. The Rio Grande do Sul team started the round in 18th place, but managed to escape relegation with a decisive victory in the final match of the competition.
With this triumph, Inter reached 44 points and took 16th place, exactly the first position outside the relegation zone. The result was enough to leave behind the direct competitors of Ceará, who lost their matches and finished the championship at Z-4 with 43 points each.
