
The Minister of the Federal Court (STF) Alexander de Moraes said this Tuesday (23) that the meetings with the president of the Central Bank, Gabriel Galipolotook place to face the sanctions applied to it by the United States with the Magnitsky law.
Moraes issued a press release after the newspaper O Globo revealed that he had met with Galípolo to intercede on behalf of Banco Master. His wife, the lawyer Viviane Barci de Moraeswas hired by the institution to provide services for approximately 130 million reais.
In the note, the Minister of STF said that the meetings took place in the presence of the president of Banco do Brasil, the president and the legal vice president of Banco Itaú. Moraes also said he met jointly with the presidents of the National Confederation of Financial Institutions, Febraban, BTG and the vice presidents of Santander and Itaú.
During all the meetings, the minister said, “specific issues were discussed exclusively on the serious consequences of the application of the said law, including the possibility of maintaining banking transactions, current accounts, credit and debit cards.”
According to a report by journalist Malu Gaspar, the contacts with Galípolo took place in July, before the banker’s arrest. Daniel Vorcaro and the BC decrees the extrajudicial liquidation of the Main bankin November.
According to information provided to the journalist, Moraes contacted Galípolo to inquire about the progress of the sale operation of the BRB. The minister reportedly told the BC president that he liked Vorcaro and that Master opposed it because it was taking space from the big banks.
Still according to the newspaper O Globo, based on this information, Moraes would have asked British Columbia to approve the agreement with the BRB.
Galípolo reportedly responded to Moraes that BC technicians had discovered fraud in the transfer of 12.2 billion reais of Master credits to the BRB. Given this information, according to the O Globo publication, the minister said that if fraud was proven, there would be no way to approve the deal.
