The News Media Association (AMI) launched the campaign “Your POWER is to be INFORMED. Protect your right to information. Protect journalism”a citizen awareness initiative that highlights the importance of truthful information and professional journalism as essential pillars of democracy and individual and collective freedom.
The campaign is based on a central idea: information is not a luxury or an accessory product of contemporary digital consumption, but a fundamental right recognized by the advanced democracies. When information is degraded, manipulated or diluted in noise, the ability of citizens to make free and conscious decisions is weakened. In this sense, a well-informed society is a freer, more critical and more resistant to manipulation.
ME launches this initiative in a context marked by a an unprecedented abundance of informationbut also due to the proliferation of disinformation, the circulation of unverified content, the pressure of algorithms and the growing impact of digital platforms and artificial intelligence on the information ecosystem. In this scenario, the overabundance of messages does not always translate into better information and can erode the right to be informed if the quality, independence and credibility of sources are not protected. The campaign emphasizes a key distinction: not all information is journalism, nor does all informational content guarantee the right to information.
professional journalism It is defined by its method, its ethics and its vocation of public service.. Reporting requires checking facts, comparing sources, contextualizing events and taking responsibility. This work does not arise spontaneously or free of charge, but requires time, resources, training and solid means capable of carrying out its work with complete editorial independence.
ME warns that the economic fragility of the sector, as well as profound technological transformations, have generated an environment of unequal competition in which actors who do not produce information benefit from its dissemination without assuming the same obligations or responsibilities. If this situation is not corrected, it weakens public debate, impoverishes democratic deliberations and exposes citizens to polarization, populism and manipulation of information.
With “Your POWER is to be INFORMED”, the News Media Association launches a citizen appeal that transcends the media and journalists themselves. Defending the right to information concerns society as a whole: public institutions, technology companies, political leaders and citizens. Protecting this right requires public policies recognizing the value of journalism, balanced regulatory frameworks, sustainable economic models and citizens aware of the importance of supporting quality information.
The campaign will be broadcast through different media and formatswith direct messages aimed at citizens, and seeks to strengthen social awareness of the role of professional journalism as an essential democratic infrastructure. In an era marked by noise, speed and confusion, AMI affirms that betting on journalism means betting on collective intelligence and a stronger, more informed and freer democracy.
