Police are investigating an accident that occurred on Christmas Eve, inside São Paulo, involving a BMW and which caused the death of five people from the same family.
The five victims lived in Iacanga and were on their way to Reginópolis, 23 km away, on Wednesday evening (24), when the car they were in was hit from behind by the BMW, on the Hilário Spuri Jorge highway.
The collision caused the death of the couple Luís Carlos de Souza Pinheiro, 36, and Paula Daniela Martins, 45, their children, Luís Otávio Pinheiro, 12, and Felipe Martins Pinheiro, 4, and Dulcinéia Aparecida Martins Lozano, 54, Paula’s sister.
The family car caught fire after the accident. The driver of the BMW, whose name has not been released, was slightly injured.
According to TV TEM, the driver of the luxury car admitted in a statement to the police that he had drunk alcohol after arguing with his girlfriend. He allegedly refused to take a breathalyzer test. The man also said the family car had been stopped on the road with its lights off, a version that will be investigated by police.
The deaths caused unrest in Iacanga, a town of 10,000 inhabitants located in the central-western region of São Paulo. The city council declared three days of official mourning in the city.
Dulcinéia was a teacher in the Iacanga municipal school system, in the area of early childhood education. “A dedicated educator, who leaves her mark in the lives of so many children and families,” lamented the town hall in a press release.
The town halls of Reginópolis and Arealva, in the same region, also published notes of solidarity with the neighboring municipality.
The five victims were buried Thursday evening (25), after a funeral vigil which lasted only an hour.
