Military policeman Leonardo Alves Ferreira, 30, was killed with his own pistol on a street in Itaquera, in the eastern zone of São Paulo, early this Friday morning (18), apparently after being involved in a fight with drug traffickers. He was not on duty at the time of the unrest. The soldier was found lying on the ground, with several injuries, by police officers called to the scene.
The PM was rescued by a Samu (Mobile Emergency Care Service) team and transported to the Waldomiro de Paula municipal hospital, also in the East zone, but he did not resist.
According to the police report recorded at the 63rd Police District, in Vila Jacuí, a witness said he met the policeman, a friend and a girlfriend early in the morning to consume alcoholic drinks at a bar in the area.
On the way back, around 3:30 a.m., the Prime Minister’s friend stayed at home. Ferreira and the two women allegedly decided to go through the so-called region 14 to buy drugs and then go to a motel.
Nearby, in an alley, one of the women got out of the car and asked a drug dealer if he had an “icy spear.” Given the positive response, she handed over the money and, at that point, according to the statement, Ferreira got out of the car, announced that he was a military police officer and shot the seller with a gun.
Then another man, who was nearby, intervened and said “that’s not how it works.”
Other men appeared and began a physical fight. In the confusion, one of those involved managed to grab the police officer’s weapon and shot the victim at least five times. The shooter then fled.
Security camera footage shows the officer running, falling and then being shot. Cameras also captured the two women trying to help Ferreira, but struggling to carry him to the car, despite help from passers-by on the street.
Shortly after, the military police arrived on site and called the Samu team.
Residents of Virgínia Ferni Street, where the policeman was shot, told Record’s Balanço Geral that they heard numerous gunshots and saw the policeman lying on the ground early in the morning. The PM led an operation in the area to try to find the shooter.
