Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency) decided this Thursday (18) to increase the number of employees responsible for supervision in São Paulo, in the area under Enel concession. An order to this effect will be issued today. The agency also announced the creation of an internal committee to coordinate actions already underway against the company.
Enel is facing a procedure to revoke its concession contract with Aneel, but this is paralyzed by a request for review valid until February.
With the new power outage, like the one Leaf As shown, there is strong pressure for the agency to resume the trial before the deadline, which could lead to a process of expiring Enel’s contract.
Aneel’s board of directors met in an extraordinary way this Thursday and, in his opening speech, the general director, Sandoval Feitosa, said that Enel had received from Aneel the largest fine in the history of the agency, amounting to 165.8 million reais, requested for cuts in 2023. The company, however, managed to suspend the sanction in court.
After the 2024 power cuts, Aneel’s technical management issued a report on Enel’s failures and transgressions, which Sandoval said is a step that precedes the contract expiration process.
The director’s speech comes amid criticism of Enel and Aneel for the delay in starting the expiration process. This Wednesday (17), the Ministry of Mines and Energy made a new request to the agency to initiate a process that will lead to the revocation of the concession contract by the Italian company.
Sandoval, in turn, tried to show that the agency is acting within its authority.
“Crises of this magnitude require the coordination of private institutions, regulators and public authorities,” he said. “I am sure we will find a way out to minimize the problems in the Enel region.”
