
The Board of Directors of the Ramon Llull Institute (IRL), meeting this Tuesday, appointed Anna Guitart as new director. The journalist will take office after Pere Almeda’s term as head of this institution dedicated to the international projection of the Catalan language and culture took place on November 7. This appointment comes just a week after Guitart completed his mission as curator of the Barcelona program at the recent Guadalajara Book Fair, which was attended by 80 Catalan writers and artists from other disciplines.
Guitart will take office on January 8, 2026, according to the press release sent by the IRL, which has a consortium made up of the government of the Generalitat of Catalonia, the government of the Balearic Islands, the Barcelona City Council and the Palma City Council. The Board of Directors is headed by the Minister of Culture of the Generalitat, Sònia Hernández Almodóvar; the regional secretary of Culture and Sports of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Pedro Vidal Monserrat; and the councilor for culture and creative industries of Barcelona City Hall, Xavier Marcé.
Guitart, a well-known figure in the Catalan literary sector, is a journalist and screenwriter specializing in literature and books. After years of work in literary journalism, she was a curator responsible for designing the literary and artistic proposal of Barcelona as guest of honor at FIL in Guadalajara. He started his career at Ràdio Barcelona and later worked on the program The Republicby Joan Barril, on COM Ràdio. He was part of the documentary team Septemberby Carles Bosch, and worked as a screenwriter on programs such as what is it about (Channel 33), The bocamoll (TV3) or Via Lliure (Channel 33), in addition to producing the second season of the program Did you know (Channel 33).

Guitart comes to power after the end of the mandate of political scientist Pere Almeda, who spent four years leading the institution, with the main aim of creating a network of residences, as he stated in an interview with EL PAÍS, a project that is not finished. His arrival was somewhat sudden following the resignation of Francesc Serés, just four months after taking office, citing “his own will and personal reasons”. The IRL has around 70 employees and has been in operation for over twenty years, with the aim of promoting language and culture around the world.
