In a card streamed worldwide via Netflix, Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul faced off, in a card that also featured well-known MMA names taking risks in the ring.
This Friday (19), one of the most anticipated boxing events of the year was held in Miami (USA). In a card streamed worldwide via Netflix, Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul faced off, in a card that also featured well-known MMA names taking risks in the ring.
A two-time heavyweight champion in the noble art, the Englishman proved his favoritism towards the social media star, who faced what was considered his biggest challenge during his short career in the sport. And he won by knockout in the sixth round.
The fight
The first round was quite studied and the fighters had little engagement, even if Paul managed to come out of this first part of the fight with a certain advantage. In the second round, Joshua began to relax more offensively and go after the YouTuber, who was trying to land as much as he could to keep the pace of the fight going.
In the third round, the former world heavyweight champion kept up the pressure while the American continued to hold the fight in the clinch and already showed little offensive effectiveness. The fight continued in this vein also in the fourth round, when Paul continued to try to clinch and even a strange fall from the YouTuber ended up stopping the fight for a while.
Anthony Joshua continued to land his punches well, seeing his opponent attempt to find any opening to stop the fight and take a breather. The Englishman had two knockdowns against him in the fifth round, managing to recover and eventually managing to position himself more offensively in the final moments of this part of the fight, but being placed against the corner by the Brit.
Another knockdown suffered by Jake Paul in the sixth round and Joshua continued to attack, notably using his right to reach the American. The YouTuber even provoked the Englishman, but a straight right sent him back to the canvas and, with difficulty getting up, the referee stopped the fight and gave victory to Anthony Joshua by knockout.
Anderson Silva is knocked out in a fight between former UFC champions
Anderson Silva’s boxing career saw another chapter this Friday when he faced Tyron Woodley in a duel between former champions and former UFC stars. And the Brazilian showed that at the age of 50, he found himself in the ring after a more than successful career in MMA.
At the beginning of the fight, the “Spider” went on the attack, but Woodley managed to get out of the duel somewhat balanced in this part of the duel. The former welterweight champion sought to control the distance against a bigger and more experienced rival as a boxer, preventing the Brazilian’s biggest advances.
In the second round, however, Anderson “put his foot on the gas” and attempted to land precise blows on Woodley. The American tried to defend and respond, but was placed near the ropes by the Brazilian. There, in the first big opportunity he had, an uppercut shook “Spider’s” opponent, who did not miss the opportunity to throw more punches until “The Chosen One” fell.
Even though the American managed to get up and seemed ready to resume the fight, his corner decided to throw in the towel and end the fight. Thanks to this, the former UFC middleweight champion achieved another victory in boxing (his third in official fights) since leaving MMA aside.
Other attractions of the event.
Another Brazilian was also in action at the Anthony Joshua x Jake Paul event. Keno Marley had his first professional boxing fight this Friday, against the American Diarra Davis. The Bahian performed well in the ring and won the judges’ decision.
Additionally, four belts were up for grabs on the card. The American Alycia Baumgardner managed to retain the WBA (World Boxing Association), IBF (International Boxing Federation) and WBO (World Boxing Organization) super featherweight belts by beating the Canadian Leila Beaudoin.
In the fight for the undisputed bantamweight belt, New Zealander Cherneka Johnson defeated Canadian Amanda Galle to continue holding that title. In turn, Englishwoman Caroline Dubois also managed to successfully defend her title by defeating Italian Camilla Panatta to remain World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion. Also in the fight for the strawweight title of this organization, the Costa Rican Yokasta Valle retained her title thanks to a victory over the American Yadira Bustillos.
