The Archdiocese of São Paulo (SP) was the target of complaints after Father Júlio Lancellotti was banned from broadcasting masses live on social media. The decision was made by Cardinal Archbishop Dom Odilo Scherer.
In comments on the archdiocese’s Instagram posts, several faithful questioned the measure and called the decision “persecution” and an attempt to “silence” religious people.

“Censorship and persecution of the Church in the 21st century? Order of silence for those who only do good? Where is the explanation, Mr. Cardinal?” wrote a believer. “Is a Church that wants the silence of its messengers in fact the Church of Christ? Will all SP priests no longer broadcast masses live or will only those of a particular priest no longer be broadcast?” argued another.
To date, the Archdiocese of São Paulo has not commented on this matter. THE Metropolises contacted the local press office, but received no response. The space remains open.

Father Julio Lancellotti celebrates the election of the new pope: “Long live”
Understand the case
Father Júlio Lancellotti was banned from broadcasting masses live on social media following a decision by Cardinal Archbishop Dom Odilo Scherer, of the Archdiocese of São Paulo. Last Sunday (14/12), he confirmed that this would be the last time that morning mass would be broadcast online.
“Until otherwise advised, from next Sunday, mass will only be held in person. There will be no more transmission,” said the priest.
In a press release, Júlio Lancellotti confirmed the announcement, specifying that he will also be absent from social networks and explaining the reason that would justify the order from the Archepisco.
“Broadcasts are temporarily suspended, but Sunday masses will continue to be celebrated normally, at 10 a.m., in the chapel of the São Judas University, in Mooca. Social networks are not used during a temporary gathering period,” says an extract from the press release.
It is also possible that the priest will be expelled from the parish of São Miguel Archangel, where he has worked for more than 40 years. However, Júlio said he would not leave the premises.
“The information on the transfer of the São Miguel Arcanjo Parish is not accurate. I reaffirm my belonging and my obedience to the Archdiocese of São Paulo,” he said.
