The governments of Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and the Dominican Republic have congratulated Nasry Asfura, who was declared winner this Wednesday of the elections held more than 20 days ago, which were marked by allegations of electoral fraud by the Liberal Party and the ruling LIBRE party.
The eight countries did this in a single statement in which they expressed their desire to “work together on the issues that bind us as sister countries, in particular trade, security, migration and strengthening democracy in the region.”
In the note, the various diplomatic departments wanted to assess the “performance” of the National Electoral Council (CNE) in a post-election context marked by what they described as “pressure” after the Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla, as well as the current Honduran government headed by Xiomara Castro, denounced fraud and an “electoral coup” due to the delays and interruptions during the audit and asked several times to retell it minute by minute, after finding inconsistencies in thousands of them.
In doing so, they “highlighted the responsibility of their (CNE) employees throughout the national territory and the leadership qualities of the ministries in fulfilling their mandate.” “We also highlight the civic responsibility that citizens have shown in exercising their vote and the patience with which they have waited for the final verification, showing a commendable commitment to peace and institutionality,” they added after the publication of a result in which almost all the protocols were examined, 24 days after Hondurans went to the polls.
The eight governments reaffirmed their “solidarity” with Hondurans and expressed their “desire that the transition develops in a peaceful and orderly manner and contributes to strengthening national coexistence.”
On the other hand, they “welcomed” the work of the election observation mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the European Union, whose “accompaniment, together with national observers, contributed to a comprehensive and impartial review of the process and provided citizens with clarity on the legitimacy of the results.”
