Argentine player Manuel Armoa Morel, 23, said he was called a monkey by a Sesi Bauru supporter, inside São Paulo, on Saturday evening (13), and filed a complaint with the police.
Leader of Guarulhos Volleyball, Morel was warming up shortly after the defeat against Sesi, by 3 sets to 2, in the Superliga, when a man started shouting: “mono (monkey) shouts, mono shouts”.
Guarulhos’ management claims that the athlete is deeply shaken and is committed to helping him, in addition to following the case until the attacker is held criminally responsible, as required by law.
On the GE portal, the athlete claims that the Bauru team supporter repeated the phrase at least four times.
In a statement, Vôlei Guarulhos said members of the commission and other athletes tried to contain the attacker, who fled the scene.
“The license plate of the vehicle used by the perpetrator was noted and, immediately, our technical supervisor, Daniel Jorge Jr., went to the city police station to file a police report,” the club said.
Sesi Bauru also spoke out saying she was trying to identify who was responsible for the act of racism.
“Once your involvement is confirmed, you will be banned from the games and prevented from accessing any Sesi-SP unit, event or space, which is available to law enforcement authorities to collaborate in the necessary clarifications,” Sesi said.
The CBV (Brazilian Volleyball Confederation), organizer of the competition, says it is gathering all the elements of the match, such as the match delegate’s report, images and witness statements, to transmit them to the investigating bodies.
The report was unable to contact the player until publication of this text.
Despite the defeat against Sesi, Morel was the top scorer of the match, with 29 points.
