MADRID, December 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least nine people died this Saturday following the detonation of two improvised explosive devices believed to have been planted by bandits on a road in the Nigerian state of Zamfara, in the northwest of the African country.
The incident took place in Maru Local Government Area. Initially, an explosion claimed the lives of four people and destroyed two motorcycles, while the second explosion killed five people and hit a trailer, according to ‘The Cable’.
Zamfara police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar said details surrounding the explosions were still incomplete, but said investigations had already begun to determine the cause of the incident.
Recent years have seen an upsurge in insecurity, previously centered in the northeast of the country, where Boko Haram and its splinter branch, the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), operate in central and western areas of the country, in most cases linked to armed gangs and criminal networks.
