At least 13 people died and 98 left after the derailment of the interoceanic train that runs along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec this Sunday morning, near the town of Nizanda, in the state of Oaxaca, as confirmed by the Marina Secretariat. 250 people traveled on the train: 241 passengers and 9 crew members. Authorities have confirmed that over the past 100 years, some 36 passengers have been hospitalized due to serious injuries, five of which are serious.
The derailment occurred when the main engine left the road. The convoy is made up of two locomotives and four passenger cars. The train was traveling on line Z, which runs from Salina Cruz, in the province of Oaxaca, to Coatzacoalcos, in the state of Veracruz. The line belongs to the Mexican government and is part of the Interoceánico Corridor del Istmo de Tehuantepec project, which since 2023 aims to reactivate the railway lines in southern Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum sent a message on her social networks to assure that emergency organizations are available to help passengers affected by the derailment. “The heroes are in the IMSS hospitals of Matías Romero and Salina Cruz, as well as in the IMSS-Bienestar of Juchitán and Ixtepec,” he wrote.
