The junta has intensified its bombing campaign since the start of Myanmar’s civil war, after the military seized power in a 2021 coup that ended a decade of democracy in the country.
The army has called elections for December 28, but rebels have vowed to prevent voting in territories under their control.
A military plane bombed the Mrauk-U general hospital in western Rakhine state, bordering Bangladesh, on Wednesday evening, official Wai Hun Aung said on the spot.
“The situation is terrible,” he said. “So far we can confirm 31 deaths, and we believe there will be more deaths. There are also 68 injured, and this number will continue to increase.”
At least 20 covered bodies were seen lying on the ground outside the hospital that night. A junta spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
